WOMEN'S HEALTH & HAIR LOSS
Women's hair loss:
medical causes & risks
Female hormonal imbalance problems is a leading cause of hair loss in
women. Male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens may be
out of balance to cause excessive hair loss.
Various forms of estrogen can "oppose" androgens and thereby reduce their availability to the
cell, by blocking androgen receptors. Some women may also experience permanent
hair loss during pregnancy or when starting or stopping oral contraceptives.
If balding occurs due to birth control
pills, then a woman should consult with
her doctor about switching to another
pill.
Pregnant women and
women who go through menopause may experience excessive hair loss or
thinning hair. Female-pattern baldness typically begins
during menopause when women's estrogen levels decrease and
testosterone increases, causing hair loss.
Pregnancy and the months after labor,
post-partum are especially vulnerable to hair loss, since there is
abnormal activity of body hormones at the time. Women may notice that they are
losing hair at the end of a pregnancy or after childbirth due to
hormonal changes. Many
women notice hair loss about 3 – 6 months after they've had a baby.
Several months’ later female hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels,
and normal cycle of growth and hair loss returns to normal again.
In most cases, hair re-growth will return to previous conditions
between one to six months.
Another normal scalp hair loss is Telogen
effluvium, a common type of hair loss caused when a large percentage
of scalp hairs are shifted into "shedding" phase and later the
re-growth stage occurs. Cosmetic alternatives, such as hair
replacements or wigs, can help conceal female hair loss with great
success!

Some of the most common
hair loss causes, other than female pattern baldness are:
stress related hair loss
may be a factor in the hair loss. Furthermore, stress can
increase the speed of the hair loss process of individuals who have genetically
inherited the trait. Severe stress,
such as the loss of a loved one, severe illness or major surgery, may lead to hair loss.
- Pregnancy and post-menopausal
states
-
Ovarian tumors,
ovarian-cysts
- Thyroid disease medication
- Weight loss due to crash diets or
bulimia
- Medication
- Chemotherapy
- Autoimmune condition
Drugs, chemo and radiation therapies, and
diseases, such as circulatory disorders and arthritis, can cause hair loss.
Chemotherapy medication destroy cancer cells, and other cells, including those
cells that format and build the hair shafts
which are responsible for hair growth. In most
cases, the hair is lost rapidly in
large quantities during chemo treatment. Once treatment is stopped, the
hair usually grows back to it's normal pre therapy state.
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition
in which the cells that make pigment (melanocytes)
are destroyed, resulting in patches of
hair and skin that become white. There
may also be a link with decreased bone
mineral density in postmenopausal women.
In a study of 293 healthy postmenopausal
women, those who had experienced
premature graying of a majority of their
hair by age 40 had decreased bone
density throughout their bones.

As with any medical condition, check with your doctor for possible
reasons for your hair loss. Check with your doctor
for diagnosis of your hair loss and to check that your
thyroid is normal. Thinning hair is just one of the many symptoms that
may suggest a low or hypo-thyroid condition -- prevalent in women going
through mid-life hormonal changes.
It
may be necessary for you to see an endocrinologist for hormone
imbalances, namely androgens. Your birth control pills might be
too strong for you. Your gynecologist can monitor your estrogen
and progesterone levels which fluctuate during pregnancy and menopause.
